US President Donald Trump on Friday congratulated British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on his victory in Britain's general election earlier in the day.

"I want to congratulate Boris Johnson on a terrific victory ... The numbers are tremendous. I want to congratulate," Trump said in the Oval Office.

"It's going to be a good thing for the United States also, because it means a lot of trade. A tremendous amount of trade. They want to do business with us so badly," he added.

The US State Department on the same day delivered a congratulatory message to London, saying that Washington is committed to expanding the economic relationship by reaching a comprehensive free trade agreement with Britain once it formally withdraws from the European Union.

Boris Johnson was officially declared winner of Britain's general election on Friday when his Conservatives passed the finishing post for a majority government.
