The sport of draughts made its debut at China's National Games when the event opened on Tuesday in Tianjin.

A total of 96 players from 22 provincial teams will vie for six gold medals in the five-day finals.

The 96 finalists won the tickets to the finals after a three-month preliminaries which saw over 4,000 athletes from all over the country compete.

Draughts is one of the most ancient games dating back to 4000 years ago. However, the sport only gained recognition in China a decade ago when the country's sports authorities started to promote it.
