Sailors from 12 countries and regions will take part in the 2018 Nacra 17 Shanghai Cup & Nacra 17 Asian Championship.

The 2018 Nacra 17 Shanghai Cup & Nacra 17 Asian Championship will be held at Shanghai’s Dishui Lake in Pudong New Area over the weekend. The opening ceremony for the three-day event, which was attended by sailors from 12 countries and regions, was held near the Huangpu River yesterday.

Yang Xuezhe and Hu Xiaoxiao will represent Team China. They placed first among all Asian countries in last year’s version of the competition. Team Britain will have John Gimson and Anna Burnet competing in the Shanghai event. The pair placed second in last year’s World Cup final and finished eighth at this year’s world championships.

Lorenzo Bressani and Cecilia Zorzi will represent Team Italy, while Lucas Chatonnier and Noa Ancian will sail for Team France. Other teams taking part in the rather oddly-named sailing tournament are from Australia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Singapore, Japan and China’s Hong Kong.

The Nacra 17 speed sailing boat entered the competition level during the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. The newly added hydrofoil Nacra 17 boat will appear at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Games.

The event, which sails off today, is organized by the Shanghai Yacht Club with support from World Sailing, the China Yachting and Windsurfing Association and the Shanghai Sports Bureau.
