World No. 5 Alexander Zverev and No. 6 Marin Cilic experienced traditional Chinese lantern making in a complex of Shanghai’s distinctive shikumen houses during the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Monday.

The tennis players helped make and light two Chinese lanterns – one featuring the theme of the city and the other the 10th anniversary of the tournament – under the guidance of local lantern-making artist Lu Xiezhuang.

They also visited a museum which presents a house in the traditional shikumen style.

The activity, which started in 2011, is aimed at inviting tennis players to experience local culture.

This year’s Shanghai Rolex Masters is being held from October 6 to 14, and features top players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
