The 4th Shanghai Media Football Invitational Tournament has kicked off at Shanghai Locomotiv Stadium in Jing’an District, featuring 16 teams representing Shanghai’s major press and media organizations.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shanghai Football Association President Zhu Guanghu and former Shanghai star player Sun Ji.

“The development of Shanghai’s football in recent years is partly thanks to youth football projects and public sport promotions. Journalists play important role in the phenomenon. Having them involved in the sport itself will benefit their work,” said Zhu.

The teams will play a group stage before entering a knockout round. Some teams have invited expat journalists. The final falls on July 6.

Jointly organized by Shanghai Social Sport Management Center, Shanghai Journalist Association, Shanghai Football Association and Jiang’an District Sports Bureau, the tournament is part of the 2019 Shanghai Amateur Games.

It has also been listed by Jing’an District as a major amateur sport project this year. Most of the participating media are based in Jing’an.
