Weight-loss cash-challenge a roaring success
Chongqing University’s weight-loss cash-challenge has proved to be yet another roaring success after students lost a total of 1,320kg.
It is the third year the university has offered a cash incentive to its students in a bid to promote a healthy lifestyle among its alumni.
Almost 1,000 students took part in the one-month battle to lose weight and the university announced on June 1 that 328 students lost a total of 1,320kg.
Ninety-two of the 328 participants, who successfully lost weight in this year’s competition, reduced over 5kg while three others shed over 15kg.
Students got between 30 yuan to 90 yuan per kilogram lost while the first five winners received an additional sport scholarship from 500 yuan up to 2,000 yuan. One third of the rewards were donated to 17 volunteer programs in the school.
Guo Fei, who won second prize, has taken part in the event three times with varying results. In the first year, he failed to lose weight. But the student was determined to do better last year and worked hard to lose 13.4kg. This year Guo did even better by losing 16kg.
"After I slimmed down, I have been no longer out of spirits and become more diligent," Guo said. "I also felt more confident."
Another participant, Peng Jiaqi, believed he had become handsome after lost 9.1kg. Peng says the secret to his weight loss was down to employing good eating habits and taking regular exercise.
“Fitness has become a part of my life," he added.
