Witnesses film young man allegedly molesting young girl in public

A young man has been caught by police on suspicion of molesting a girl under the age of 14 at the waiting room of Nanjing South Railway Station on August 12.

A young man has been caught by police on suspicion of molesting a girl under the age of 14 in the waiting room of Nanjing South Railway Station on August 12.

A witness took some pictures of the incident and later exposed them to a writer, Chen Lan, who is enthusiastic about the protection of children's rights and interests and posted them on Weibo.

In the photos, the girl can be seen sitting on the lap of the young man who put his hand inside the girl's dress and moved at her chest.

The witness, who's a university student, said that during the time the girl was just focusing on the mobile phone and seemed calm without any resistance. She heard the young man called himself the girl's "brother". A couple in their 50s, sitting beside the young man, seemed like their parents. The father saw the young man's behavior — which lasted at least five minutes — but didn't try to stop him.

The witness said the girls around her also discovered the situation but didn't dare to stop as the opposite side had three adults. They could just take photos to leave evidence instead. The father later found some people around them kept taking pictures so he asked the woman to take the young man and the girl away.

The incident soon caught the attention of Chinese netizens who said such behavior in public was extremely inappropriate, no matter what the young man's purpose was. Some web users also launched a cyber manhunt to find out the identities of the four people.

It's said online that the young man was a native of Fengyang, Anhui Province where his parents owned a restaurant near a middle school and the girl was adopted by the family, but none of the online claims have been confirmed by police.

Nanjing railway police said on August 14 that the man, around 20, has been caught and further investigation is ongoing.

Modern Express also reported that the man is a student who's studying in Nanjing.
