Two females tourists were confirmed dead after being swept away by big waves while climbing on reef rocks to snap pictures at the Rizhao lighthouse Scenic Area in east China’s Shandong Province on August 13, ignoring warnings from security guards at the spot.

The two tourists came from a travel agency in Yima city of central China’s Henan Province.

A witness said a total of four tourists had disappeared into the sea. Police helped rescue three of them and rushed them to hospital by ambulance. Two were confirmed dead and one was injured.

As a video posted online on August 16 shows, it was a windy day with big waves slamming against the coastline. About 20 tourists stood on the rocks to take pictures, some of whom were pulled into the sea.

According to the video, signboards warning tourists against going out to sea or climbing on the rocks could be seen along the coast.

The case is under further investigation.
