Two stray puppies were beaten to death in a community in suburban Huinan Town in Shanghai by residents whose child was bitten by the pups' mother.

Two stray puppies were beaten to death in a community in suburban Huinan Town in Shanghai by residents whose child was bitten by the puppies' mother, sparking controversy among Chinese netizens.

A stray female dog sought refuge in the community several months ago due to a leg injury, and gave birth to two pups about half a month ago.

Some kind residents prepared a tent so they could shelter from the rain and wind.

On August 23, two men beat the two pups in the tent to death with sticks around 8pm, which was caught on security camera.

The security guard of the community, surnamed Guo, said after giving birth, the mother became sensitive and often attacked people who approached the tent in order to protect her pups. She then bit a child's leg who lives in the community, which led to the family of the injured child attacking the pups to vent their anger.

The incident brought a mixed reaction online, with some people saying it was too cruel. Others expressed their understanding with the feeling of the child's family and pointed out the potential safety hazards of stray dogs.

The mother dog has been taken away by the relevant authorities.
