Two middle school students did their best to collect some of the 6,000 yuan (US$904) accidentally dropped on a Xi'an street, while those less honest made off with most of the cash.

The students, from Huashan Middle School in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, came across the cash blowing along the street after it dropped from a car passing the school.

The owner of the cash, a man surnamed Liu, remained oblivious as his wad of cash was scattered in the wind and run over by other vehicles.

That's when the two young students jumped into action, collecting as much cash as they could with seven or eight other passersby.

However, some of those "helping" made off with the cash they had collected.

The two students were able to collect about 1,500 yuan for the owner, who was soon contacted by police. The rest of the money remains unaccounted for.

Ma Jiangling, head teacher of the girls' school, said the pair were excellent at school and always willing to help others. She said they planned to reward the duo as a positive example for other students.
