A photo showing a half-naked policeman holding a baby in his arms went viral on social media Tuesday night.

The policeman, Wu Yu, from Dongcheng police station in Chuxiong, Yunnan Province, rushed to Futa Park with a colleague around 7pm after receiving a report that there was a baby found in the woods.

When they arrived on the scene, they saw the baby boy crying on the ground with a hoarse and weak voice. His lips had turned purple and his limbs were cold.

Wu soon took off his own woollen sweater and uniform to wrap the frozen baby up, holding him close to warm him with his body heat.

They then took the baby to hospital where a doctor said the boy, who's probably about 20 days old, had no external injuries or physical defects, but that he suffered hypothermia due to the cold.

He's now being treated at the hospital while the local public security bureau searches for his parents.

Chinese netizens were greatly touched by officer Wu's heart-warming actions and applauded him for his selflessness and kindness.

One web user commented, "His behavior not only warmed the baby but also warmed the city, the web and all of society on such a cold night."
