A bag stuffed with 390,000 yuan (US$60,566) in cash was returned to its owner just four hours after it was found by a hotel staffer while cleaning a room, Chengdu Economic Daily reported.

The incident happened in Chengdu, Sichuan Province on January 13.

The staffer, Xia Yuanzhen, found a black backpack stuffed with cash in the room and immediately reported the incident to her boss.

The hotel soon called police who tried to contact the owner, a man from Jiangsu surnamed Luan, but failed to reach him. They then asked Jiangsu police for help, who contacted the family of Luan and finally found him.

Luan was driving on an expressway to Leshan, also in Sichuan, when he received the call from his family. Until that point he hadn't even realized the money was missing.

With the help of Xia, the hotel and police officers, the money was returned to its owner in just four hours. Luan told police the money is the salaries of dozens of construction workers.

Chinese netizens applauded Xia, who only receives a monthly income of around 2,000 yuan, for her honesty.

But the humble woman said in an interview after the incident, "Everyone loves money, but only spending money earned by myself would make me comfortable."
