A man jumped into a mud puddle to save a drowning boy within only 20 seconds at a tourist attraction in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, on August 4, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xu Liang, 36, who is from Taizhou city of Jiangsu Province and was once a firefighter, has been widely applauded by netizens after his brother-in-law, surnamed Qiu, posted his heroic act on WeChat.

Qiu noticed a boy about 4 or 5 years old fall into a pond while fishing at around noon while he was touring the scenic area with his family in the city’s Mulan Tianchi Scenic Area.

Xu, who was much closer to the drowning boy than Qiu at the time, jumped into the pond as soon as he realized what was going on.

The boy had choked on some water in the pond and came to just seconds after being pulled to the bank.

Xu himself needed to be pulled to safety after the rescue because his feet had become stuck in the thick mud. He realized his mobile phone was broken after it became submerged during the rescue.

The boy’s remorseful parents almost knelt down in appreciation of Xu’s rescue effort.
