A bus group in Shandong Province has set up a special "guardian" seat adjacent to the driver's seat, in an effort to prevent possible interference that may affect normal driving, thepaper.cn reported.

The seat is open to volunteer passengers aged from 18 to 65 years who boast a strong sense of responsibility, according to Yang Yong, security manager of the bus company.

The “guardian” should be responsible for dealing with emergency situations when passengers seek to come into conflict with the bus driver or prevent any dangerous behaviors posing a threat to the driver's safety.

A bus that plunged off a bridge in southwest China's Chongqing on October 28, killing 15, occurred after the driver was attacked by an angry passenger.
