Wuhan University has defended its refusal to admit two men to its campus after videos of security guards restraining the men were widely circulated online.

Admission to the campus to view the famous cherry blossom display is strictly by online appointment only. The university alleged in an online statement posted Monday evening that one of the two men who tried to enter the campus on the afternoon of March 24 had no such appointment

A video shot by a passerby showed a man dressed in an outfit similar to a Japanese men’s kimono and his companion being wrestled to the ground by four security guards.

The university claimed a female security guard had asked them to leave but they had insisted on entering. Three security guards came to offer back-up. The argument turned violent ad the two men had to be restrained, the statement said.

A large number of visitors are attracted to Wuhan University every spring. The university said it had reprimanded the security guards and at the same time called for tourists to follow the rules and appreciate beautiful blossoms in an orderly manner.
