Olympic medals, torches on show at Shanghai Tower
International Olympic Committee Vice President Antonio Samaranch Jr gives a speech at the launching ceremony of Olympic EXPO Shanghai.
Olympic torches, medals, posters and other souvenirs are on display at the Olympic EXPO Shanghai, which is being held on the 119th floor of Shanghai Tower from November 24 to January 31, 2019.
The EXPO marks the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and was first held in Beijing before coming to Shanghai. It also serves to promote the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in Beijing and towns in neighboring Hebei Province in February 2022.
The launch ceremony of the Olympic EXPO Shanghai was attended by International Olympic Committee vice presidents Yu Zaiqing and Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr, as well as Olympic champions Deng Yaping, Wang Liqin, Zou Shiming, Yang Yang, Tao Luna, and more.
During the EXPO, Olympic athletes will be invited to give lectures and take part in interactive activities with young visitors to promote the Olympic spirit.
Some exhibits include the Olympic torches, medals, post stamps, and Olympic-themed paintings by top-class domestic and foreign painters, including Chinese artists Chen Peiqiu, Nan Xi, Spanish painter couple Isabel Jurado Cabaes and Rafael Aguilera Beana.
Samaranch Jr said the EXPO will go on in a few other cities around China after its Shanghai stop. Talking about his expectation of the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, Samaranch Jr said scale and investment are no longer the major focus.
“It doesn’t have to be a Winter Games with the largest scale or investment, but will surely be the most ‘intelligent’ one, during which sustainable and intelligent development will be highlighted,” he added.
Visitors holding Shanghai Tower sightseeing tickets (180 yuan, or US$26) get free access to the Olympic EXPO Shanghai.
The EXPO is being held on the 119th floor of Shanghai Tower from November 24 to January 31, 2019.
