A yellow duck made from 15,000 plastic bottles is now on show at the People’s Square Metro station. The installation aims to get people thinking about protecting the marine environment.

The yellow duck is part of a campaign launched by the China Maritime Museum and the Norwegian consulate general in Shanghai. It was previously displayed in the museum and Dishui Lake station of Metro Line 16.

Yuan Long, the artist who made the yellow duck, said a million plastic bottles were being consumed across the world every minute and are a primary source of marine pollution.

“The bottles I collected were from 4,000 families of Shanghai,” said Yuan. “Here, besides the duck I also made a polar bear, imagining them to have an unexpected encounter in the Arctic.”

Kristin Iglum, consul general of Norway in Shanghai, said the amount of plastic waste in the Barents Sea in the Arctic had risen drastically in the past 10 years.

“Exhibitions like 'Wandering Back – Discovering the Arctic' are therefore extremely important as a way to create more attention on the issue of marine litter,” she said.

The yellow duck will stay at the station until January 5.
