Chefs from local universities showed off their skills during the Shanghai University Gourmet Carnival at East China University of Science and Technology on Sunday.

Dishes, including classic regional specialities, such as hong shao rou (pork stewed brown sauce) and fried shrimp, creative dishes and beautifully shaped pastries were all presented at the new university canteen, attracting 2,000 teachers, students and guests.

Visitors to the carnival all got an apple from Kashgar in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as Shanghai universities have joined a program to aid impoverished areas in Guizhou Province and Xinjiang by purchasing their produce.

Some of the dishes at the carnival proved highly photogenic.
