The east section of Jiangpu Road Tunnel was successfully dug through on Monday.

Jiangpu Road Tunnel was successfully dug through on Monday, its contractor Chengtou Group said.

The 2.28-kilometer tunnel is the 17th beneath the Huangpu River, which stretches from Jiangpu Road and Longjiang Road in Yangpu District to Minsheng Road and Shangcheng Road in the Pudong New Area.

Work is expected to be completed next year to strengthen cross-river integration and benefit development of the Yangpu Waterfront.

The project has overcome the complex geology across the Huangpu River section, penetrating the Pudong and Puxi flood walls and other key structures.

Meanwhile, it crosses the remaining pile foundation areas such as Laomatou (old dock area), and overlaps with the under construction Metro Line 18.

The tunnel is composed of east and west sections, the latter of which was dug through first earlier this year.

In the next step, construction will focus on the internal connecting passage and mid-tunnel section.
