Police with the suspect, a man surnamed He, who was wanted in connection with murders 29 years ago.

A man alleged to have killed five people and seriously injured a sixth 29 years ago in suburban Shanghai was caught on August 11, police said on Thursday.

The man, surnamed He, now 56 years old, lived in Maogang Town in Songjiang District and is said to have committed the murders because of a family dispute.

He was identified as a suspect at the time but the police had been unable to catch him over the past 29 years.

Songjiang police said they had never given up on the case and learned in July that he had been spotted in Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province in 2013.

He was then tracked down to Zhuhai in Guangdong Province and was apprehended on Tuesday.

Police took him back to Shanghai where he is being detained.
