Worthwhile Nepal service project

NINETEEN students, four teachers, three buses, seven flights. This is how we journeyed over to Nagarkot, Nepal.

There we spent three days teaching 60 Nepali children aged 2 to 14 in four different classes on three core subjects: English, Maths and Science. During these three days, they learnt about fractions, direct/indirect speech, algebra, numbers 1-20, living and non-living things, the sun and its solar system, transportation, animals, colors and the lunar eclipse. The lessons were taught in many ways, using games, flashcards, songs, repetition, worksheets and pizza cutouts. Not only did the students learn — so did we. New greetings in the form of handshakes were taught to us as well as Nepali words. Every evening, we spent time reflecting and planning for the next day of lessons, trying to make them as engaging and fulfilling as we could to teach the children as much as possible. Although we did do a lot of teaching, we also made new friends and played games with the children. The students and staff at the school were unbelievably welcoming when we arrived at the school.

It was also really interesting to learn about the Dashain Festival, which was taking place when we arrived. The children were not at school for a day because of the festival (the biggest of the year), so instead we learnt about their traditions from Miss Kalayani, head of Sanjeevani Primary School, who led a tika ceremony in the farmhouse for us. When we left the school, the children all gathered to say goodbye and present us with notes and gifts; we will miss the friends that we made there. We feel like we have achieved our goal, which was to teach the children and learn about their culture. We are very grateful to our guides in Nepal, our teachers, the teachers at the school, the children and finally our parents.
