Anime star Totoro and his flying dreams
Good news for Japanese anime fans in Shanghai: Totoro — the cute and friendly spirit from Miyazaki’s animation “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988) — and other beloved characters of Studio Ghibli are in the city for a themed exhibition.
Underway at the Shanghai World Financial Center, the show, which runs through October 7, comprises two sectors: the artistic world of Ghibli — in memory of the 30th anniversary of the release of “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Castle in the Sky” — and Ghibli’s flying dreams. Nearly 300 original sketches and manuscripts made by the studio’s masters are showcased.
The highlight is the Catbus, depicted as a grinning, 12-leg cat with a hollow body that serves as a bus in “My Neighbor Totoro.”
Visitors can ride in this Catbus and relive the scene in the film.
Co-founded by Japanese film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli is one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world and home to some of the most revered and beloved animated works to have ever graced the screen.
During the exhibition, visitors can be a guest at Satsuki and Mei’s house — a half-size replica of the building described in the original works — and view the 8-meter-long airship featured in “Castle in the Sky.”
“I have strongly felt that people’s interest in our works in China has grown since the 2000s,” Koji Hoshino, chairman of Studio Ghibli, said at the opening ceremony. “Many Chinese visitors have been to the Ghibli Museum (in Japan). I hope the exhibition will lead to interest spreading throughout China.”
