Joan Brossa was more than just a talented artist

JOAN Brossa (1919-98) was a renowned Spanish poet, graphic designer and visual artist. To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, a series of his visual works are on display at the Instituto Cervantes Shanghai.
For Brossa, image was an extension of the word. This vision was expressed in his literary and visual works which often appeared as satirical, ironic and critical or, on other occasions, irreverent yet playful.
With the intention of bringing his work to the public and making it visible, Brossa created a series of letters, numbers, tiles and Venetian masks — works that always put the world in question.
He also managed to give his poetry the appearance of play on words, meddling in the day-to-day context to carry out its communicative action. His lyrical works (more than 80 books, all written in the Catalan language) are impregnated with the theatrical dimension as he would employ a broad and interdisciplinary vision of culture, the arts in general and the performance art in particular to make them alive.
Brossa’s creative work embraced every aspect of arts: cinema, theater (more than 360 pieces), music, cabaret, para-theatrical art, magic and the circus.
In the latter years of his creative life, he received a number of awards such as the National Prize for the Visual Arts (1992), the National Theater Prize (1998) and the UNESCO Picasso Medal.
The Shanghai exhibition features not only Brossa’s own works, but joint works of Spanish avant-garde artists Antoni Tapies and Joan Miro.
Through these creative artworks, viewers will have a chance to challenge their abstract cognitive ability and also get closer to this master of art.
