Cases of HFMD on the rise

DOCTORS have warned that it is the season for hand, foot, and mouth disease that occurs between April and July every year.

Children’s Hospital of Fudan University has been receiving between 40 and 50 HFMD patients every day this month. The number has doubled this year compared to the same time of last year.

HFMD is caused by enterovirus infection, mostly found among preschool children. The virus transmits among people through food and droplets. Herpes appear around patient’s mouth, hands or feet. Children have fever when infected. In extreme cases, the disease can be lethal.

Zen Mei, director of infectious diseases department, said despite the rise in the number of HFMD cases, most of the children who came to the hospital don’t have serious symptoms.
