Rains promise relief from scorching heat

SHANGHAI will get a slight break from the heat this week, according to the local weather authority.

Since July 24, the city has experienced consecutive “high temperature days” with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher. The mercury shot to 37.7 degrees on July 25 and 36.3 degrees yesterday.

Expected downpours should bring some relief this week, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Today’s forecast includes cloudy skies and thunderstorms, with temperature ranging between 28 and 36 degrees. The high will fall to 34 degrees tomorrow, when showers and light rains are predicted.

Rain will also hit the city on Wednesday, when the high will be around 33 degrees. Precipitation will grow heavier on Thursday and the high will drop to 30 degrees.

Typhoon Jongdari made landfall on Japan in the wee hours yesterday. It is moving to the southwest at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The weakening storm is set to enter the East China Sea today, according to the National Meteorological Center.

From Wednesday, the typhoon will turn and to the northwest and approach China’s eastern coastal regions. Local weather authorities will monitor its path as it draws closer to Shanghai.
