Panda’s black eye circles turn white

The whitening of the black eye circles of a panda at the Hangzhou Zoo has stirred speculation among netizens. The condition is possibly due to mites and is currently being treated, according to Xinhua news agency.

A pair of panda siblings named "Chengda" and "Chengxiao" arrived at the Hangzhou Zoo this September from southwest China’s Sichuan Province, both aged two years old.

Tourists at the zoo recently noticed that the dark circles around one of the panda's eyes had partly disappeared and the fur had turned white. A picture that was published online sparked concern over the panda’s illness.

Wang Lifen, a panda feeder, said the panda, Chengxiao’s, color change of eye circles from black to white was due to the shedding of fur.

“We discovered the condition about three weeks ago, but it was not so obvious at first,” Wang said.

Chengxiao has shown similar symptoms before, which were proven to be caused by mites when Chengxiao lived at the Chengdu panda base, Wang explained.

Hangzhou zoo contacted the base as soon as they found the problem and are treating the panda according to the therapy offered by the base.

Wang added that Chengxiao is in good condition, showing no symptoms of abnormality.

The zoo official said that the treatment requires time, but fans do not need to worry.
