Croatia midfielder Rakitic off to Barca from Sevilla

BARCELONA has agreed to buy Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic from La Liga rival Sevilla, the two clubs said on Monday, in a deal media reported was worth around 20 million euros (US$27.2 million).

“Barcelona and Sevilla have reached agreement for the transfer of Ivan Rakitic,” Barcelona said in a statement on its website, adding that the 26-year-old would sign a five-year contract.

Rakitic arrives at Barcelona after the club announced last week Cesc Fabregas was leaving to join English Premier League side Chelsea and he is seen as a natural replacement for the Spain playmaker.

Rakitic, who was born in Switzerland, is a “multi-faceted midfielder who combines two great virtues: physical strength and technical quality”, Barcelona said.

After coming through the youth ranks at Basel, Rakitic joined Bundesliga side Schalke 04, where he spent four seasons before moving to Sevilla in 2011.

As part of the Rakitic deal, Barcelona B team player Denis Suarez would be loaned to Sevilla for the next two seasons.

Meanwhile, Premier League team Sunderland said it has signed goalkeeper Costel Pantillimon for four years on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, who has played 18 times for Romania, will officially join Sunderland on July 1 after his contract expires at English champion Manchester City.

Pantillimon made 29 appearances for City in three years and replaced Joe Hart for two months in the 2013-14 season when England’s first-choice goalkeeper had a loss of form.
