It’s really quite a sweet, no-fuss life at Bitter

BITTER is a convivial neighborhood place which serves coffee and light bites during the day and then aperitifs in the evening, hence the name comes from the central flavor of coffee and their amaro-focused cocktails.

It’s also the complement venue to the comfortable neighborhood bistro Bird next door that offers fresh and unpretentious food.

Both venues share similar interior styles — simplistic and no-fuss with mostly white and natural wood colors. And touches of rattan elements give off a natural, calming feel.

Camden Hauge, partner behind both venues, said she wants to provide the neighborhood a venue of intimate dining experience with ideal wine pairing with the selected food and another venue with an all-day space to work or meet up with friends so it makes sense to provide offerings that span the length of the day.

I’ve come to Bitter several times during the day for its healthy, simple food and coffee and it’s a perfect spot to work on your computer. For breakfast, their granola bowl and home-baked loaf cakes are comforting options, especially when paired with a “Short Bitter” or Chai latte made with oat milk. Short Bitter is the house’s stronger version of flat white.

For lunch, they are updating the menu to offer more filling options, and so will focus on simple yet well-executed Panini.

Hauge is proud of her cocktail offerings at Bitter.

“As a neighborhood spot, we chose to focus on aperitivo — straight-forward, classic cocktails that don’t force guests to wait ages for over-garnished, over-complicated creations,” she said.

“Simple classics like Spritz or Negroni allow our patrons to focus on catching up with each other instead of trying to decode a ‘mixology’ menu.”

Matcha G+T (Matcha tea infused gin, yuzu tonic, fresh mint) (70 yuan/US$10.5) is a refreshing version of gin and tonic, while the Negroni (70 yuan) lovers can choose from six variations, from the classic of Gin, Rosso vermouth and citrus-infused Campari to the Cold Drip Boulevardier that is a mix of Bourbon, Campari, Amaro and cold drip coffee.

“To pair with the list of cocktails, we offer small snacks like herring on the house bread with seaweed butter and a Jinhua ham plate, leaving guests with enough room to head next door to Bird for dinner and then hopefully come back again for a nightcap,” Hauge said.

Wuyuan Road is filled with cozy wine bars and cocktail lounges but Hauge is confident.

“We have a very different vibe and focus on different types of cocktails,” Hauge said.
