Rail stations get new scanners

THE Shanghai railway police said yesterday that they have installed new X-ray machines at the city’s three railway stations to boost security ahead of chunyun, the 40-day travel period for the Chinese New Year.
The machines can easily detect dangerous liquids and explosive materials. They were imported from the United States and each of them comprises of two detectors.
The peak travel period for the Chinese New Year this year starts today and will last until March 16.
More than 10 million people are expected to travel by rail from the city this year.
The new X-ray machines have been installed at the Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.
Certain bags or luggage will be scanned in the new X-ray machines if the ordinary machines at the gates spot something dubious.
If a red light alert goes off during the scanning it will not be allowed on the train.
Police said the new machines will be used along with a batch of liquid identifiers which were installed at the railway stations in November last year. They are expected to increase the efficiency of security checks at the railway stations.
Besides the new X-rays, the railway police have also placed mobile police vehicles at the stations as standby units for emergencies.
The mobile units are equipped with emergency medical kits, water dispensers and bulletproof vests among others.
They will be a permanent feature at the railway stations, police said.
