Water to get armed guards

Armed Police are to be sent to protect the city's water plants during Expo.

"The importance and difficulty of the security of water during the World Expo 2010 are nothing less than the Olympics," the Shanghai Water Authority said in a press release.

The number of armed police officers to be deployed and the locations have not been revealed.

Food safety is another concern and yesterday, Yang Weijian, a local hotel director, proposed to the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference that restaurants should pay 0.5 percent of last year's income as a deposit to pay fines if they broke food-safety rules or to pay for medical treatment if they were involved in food poisoning cases.

"Restaurants will raise their awareness of food safety during the Expo if paying the deposit and further regulate their practices," he said.
