SCIS opens doors of new Upper School campus

AROUND 220 students from grades 6 though 12 will return to school on Monday, March 2, at the new SCIS Pudong Upper School Campus (Grades 6-12). The completed building on Hengqiao Road in the Kangqiao area is just five minutes' drive from the old Lower School Campus of Shanghai Community International School in Pudong.

The goal is a secure and spacious educational community for the school's growing number of students, eventually 600 to 700.

The Upper School Campus has 24 classrooms in the first completed phase of construction; the second phase will double that number to 48.

"We really want to expand opportunities for our students by building on our strong academics and adding additional programs that they also need and want," said Jon Zurfluh, head of school for the Pudong campus. "We're growing and that means more labs, more classrooms, improved technology, and additional arts opportunities - more exposure to things that this new facility will provide."

Covering a 16,000-square-meter site, the five-floor L-shaped building has an indoor swimming pool, auditorium, art gallery, Black Box theater, soccer field, gymnasium, squash courts and even more facilities when it achieves final completion sometime next year.

"We tried to create a comfortable environment, so we have lots of open spaces on the new site," Zurfluh said, "We also built it to grow with us as more students choose SCIS for their continuing education."

With a large field on the interior side, the project features various spacious function rooms and high ceilings.

A Black Box theater, that will include bleachers and chairs providing for a capacity of around 700 seats, is the centerpiece of this design with a swimming pool on one side and specialty rooms on the other. Other spaces will include a fitness center, squash courts, a video editing room, and performance studios.

The first floor includes administrative offices, classrooms and an open and spacious cafeteria that looks out onto the soccer field through a wall of glass windows and doors.

"We have an underground indoor swimming pool with a glass ceiling on top and with cafeteria seating around the roof, so students can look down to the swimming pool," Zurfluh said. The swimming pool is scheduled to be finished in the second phase.

The second floor includes a world-class library with windows overlooking a large lobby area below in the front entry space. "It's a library with lots of natural light and open space to provide for a comfortable place for students to read and study," the head of school said.

Also on the second floor are music classrooms, a whole row of small practice rooms for individual work or tutoring, and another set of standard classrooms.

"The building is set up very much on the philosophy of the fine and performing arts," Zurfluh said. The third floor featuring an art gallery and an auditorium is designed mainly for arts, music, dance and performance.

The fourth floor is dedicated to science with four big science labs including all the required equipment for Geology through Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry and Physics.

The top floor has a large gymnasium and locker rooms. With bleachers and all the necessary hardware to support the athletics program, the gymnasium has one full court and two overlapping courts for basketball and volleyball. Final decoration of this space will be completed in late March.

About 220 kids will be transferred to the upper school. The head of school estimated that the number would expand to 600-700 in the next 2-3 years.
