"LOW lands"
The Netherlands is a low-lying country, with about 27 percent of its area, where 60 percent of its population live, below sea level. This distinctive feature led to the country's name: in Dutch Nederland, in English the Netherlands - which literally mean "low lands."

Most businesses are based in the provinces of North and South Holland and Utrecht. The conurbation, which includes the country's top three cities - Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam - is referred to as the Randstad. The area is home to 10 million people, almost two thirds of the entire Dutch population, making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe.
Amsterdam
With a population of approximately 780,000, the capital city is also the country's largest city. Amsterdam's historic center, majestic buildings, museums and unique canal ring attract many tourists every year.
Rotterdam
Rotterdam is Europe's biggest seaport. The city is renowned for its striking modern architecture, as exemplified by the Erasmus Bridge, known locally as "The Swan."
The Hague
The Dutch government and parliament, the Supreme Court and the Council of State are based in The Hague. It is also the location of Queen Beatrix's palace.
