New institute to focus on public health research

The Cyrus Tang Foundation donated 120 million yuan (US$16.8 million) to Fudan University to jointly set up a high-end research institute on public health on Tuesday.

The newly established institute will focus on the cultivation of public health professionals and carry out cross-disciplinary, coordinated studies in the field of public health.

Fudan University also announced the start of a plan to establish a series of public health majors to speed up scientific research, innovation, education and talent training.

“The new institute is one important step in the plan, which aims to establish Shanghai as a city with world-class abilities in public health research, education and practice,” said Gui Yonghao, vice president of Fudan University and dean of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University.

Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai Health Commission, said the establishment of a mechanism on public prevention and control as well as health epidemic emergency management system should be enhanced during the post-pandemic period.

On the same day, the foundation also donated 30 million yuan to the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University to support the construction of a diagnostic and treatment center and regional medical network on children’s cancer.
