A monthlong xiaolong culture festival opened in Jiading District’s Nanxiang Town on Monday.

Nanxiang is home to xiaolong, the small steamed buns with a pork filling in a tasty broth.

Paying respect to the medical workers, police officers and volunteers who contributed to the city's fight against COVID-19, town representatives presented them with gift boxes of xiaolong, going around the town in three minibuses after a launch ceremony.

The festival used to feature a large public feast of xiaolong, but due to the pandemic the event won't be held this year. However, the festival remains an occasion for residents to celebrate and for tourists to relish xiaolong and other town treats.

xiaolong-making competition for both professionals and amateurs will take place at Guyi Garden on October 16, and a store featuring cartoon xiaolong figures and other popular cartoon characters created in the town opened on Monday at the tourist information center on Nanxiang Old Street.

On Monday, tourists were introduced to Yu Jin Xiang wine, a rice wine that originated in the town and is often served at local weddings. Tourists who visited Tanyuan Garden got a free bottle at a shop on Renmin Street.

If you want to taste xiaolong and would love a relaxing stroll amid ancient Chinese houses with their flying roofs, little arched bridges over meandering rivers and the intoxicating sweet scent of autumn from osmanthus trees, Nanxiang is the place to go

Xiaolong restaurants offer buns for take-out, but cooks from the Nanxiang Xiaolong Restaurant on Shengchan Street say it's best to eat the buns within five minutes after they’re served.
