A missing-person flier for Lai is posted in an elevator of her residential complex in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province.

The husband of a woman who went missing 19 days ago has been detained by police in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, authorities said on Thursday.

The missing woman, 53-year-old Lai Huili, was said to have disappeared from her home in Hangzhou in the early hours of July 5.

Police say her husband, a 55-year-old surnamed Xu, is suspected to have played a role in her disappearance. They did not say whether Lai has been found or not.

In earlier media reports, Xu claimed Lai was sleeping when he got up to use the bathroom at around 12:30am on July 5, but when he woke up at 5:30am, she was gone.

Police say they have checked surveillance footage from their residential compound and nearby areas but have apparently failed to find any trace of Lai.
