Medical staff officially open the one-stop Parkinson's disease diagnosis and treatment center at Ruijin Hospital.

A one-stop Parkinson's disease diagnosis, treatment and medical training center was opened at Ruijin Hospital on Saturday, World Parkinson's Disease Day.

Parkinson’s is a common disease among middle-aged and elderly people. In China the incidence is about 1.7 percent in people aged more than 65-years-old. This means there are 2.5 million people with Parkinson's in China, which is about half the total patients in the world.

There are 100,000 people diagnosed with Parkinson's in China every year.

“The new center offers professional, whole process, classified and intelligent management and services to patients with Parkinson’s disease,” said Dr Chen Shengdi, of Ruijin Hospital.

According to Dr Liu Jun, director of Ruijin’s neurology department, the center, which is located on the 6th floor of the hospital’s outpatient building, is specially designed and developed for patients with Parkinson’s.

Doorknobs and handrails are decorated for easy identification. Registration, testing and payment are all on the same floor.

High-tech equipment for professional Parkinson’s disease evaluation is available at the center as well as leading experts, who can offer group consultation for complicated cases.

“In addition to neurologists, we have experts in rehabilitation, imaging, psychology, nutrition and caring to provide individualized and long-term medical plans for each patient to help alleviate symptoms and improve life quality,” Liu said.
