Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang has urged automakers to boost their technological capacity and ride the latest trends to upgrade the industry and to drive high quality economic growth in the city.
The auto sector is a pillar of Shanghai's industry and a key to the city's aim of becoming a world leader in manufacturing by 2020.
Automakers should enhance competitiveness and market influence by pushing forward efforts in connectivity, electrification, shared transportation and digitalization, he said while visiting the Shanghai auto show on Monday.
This year's show at the National Exhibition and Convention Center covers 360,000 square meters, with more than 1,000 automakers and parts suppliers from 20 countries and regions.
Artificial intelligence and 5G mobile technologies, which are set to transform the global car market and change everyday lives, are highlights.
Li visited the exhibition hall of Shanghai-based automaker SAIC Motor Co, which showcased over 10 new models and a ranger of parts and connectivity applications.
He asked about the adoption of new energy and digital connectivity in the latest vehicle models, market trends and prospects for new models.
