COVID-19 measures prevent imported cases

Crew members leave a cargo ship anchored at Luojing Port in Baoshan District on Wednesday.

Police officers check identity information after crew members leave a ship at Luojing Port.
Shanghai has had no COVID-19 cases imported from waterways or ports so far, police said on Wednesday.
The harbor and waterway police said they were under great pressure to curb the virus at Shanghai’s ports, but strict measures had been implemented to secure the city.
At Luojing Port, eight crew from a cargo ship which left Thailand in early March and arrived at the Shanghai port last Sunday were allowed off the ship on Wednesday morning. They will be replaced by another crew before the ship departs.
On Tuesday, customs officers boarded the ship to give nucleic acid test to all crew members for coronavirus, which all results negative.
After crew members left the ship, police wearing protective suits checked their identities and took them to a quarantine spot in Baoshan District where they will spend 14 days.
“Our job as the police is to ensure the standards and safety of the entire process of health checks and transportation of the crew members,” said Ye Jianming, head of the Luojing Port Police Station.
A total of 544 boats have arrived at Shanghai ports since March 1, police said.
In general, crew on ships from overseas which anchor at Shanghai ports are not allowed to get off. If they have to, they need to be quarantined for 14 days.
