The 2020 Shanghai Global Champions Tour, a five-star equestrian event initially scheduled for May, has been postponed due to the global spread of coronavirus, the organizer Shanghai Juss Sports Group announced Thursday.

The organizer said they made the decision to reduce the risk of international travel and to ensure the health and safety of riders, referees and relevant staff.

"We have been discussing the possibility of holding the event as scheduled. However, our riders have been traveling around Europe and America for the tour. Considering the risk brought by global flight and different entry-exit policies across the globe, we ultimately decided to postpone the event," said Yang Yibin, deputy general manager of Juss Sports Group.

Established in 2014, the Shanghai Global Champions Tour has been held in the city for the last six years and will be held in the city until at least 2022 according to the contract.
