New AI institute hopes to cultivate 'much needed talent'

An institute was founded in Shanghai recently to accelerate research into artificial intelligence and solve cutting-edge problems in the development and cultivation of much needed talent.

Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong announced the establishment of the Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems at a meeting on December 17.

Du Zhanyuan, deputy minister of education, and Wu Qing, deputy mayor of Shanghai, jointly unveiled its plaque.

The institute will rely on the strength of Tongji University in related disciplines, but will also gather both domestic and international forces.

To be located in the Zhangjiang Science City, it will hire administrators and researchers from all over the world and strive to be an international AI technology innovation center.

It will combine AI technology with traditional disciplines to empower them with new developments and cultivate new talent with basic abilities around AI research and interdisciplinary applications.

It will focus on key issues in AI technology, such as autonomous and perception systems and collaborative intelligence. It will also set up several research platforms in order to break through core technologies in terms of intelligent sensing, network control and systems, smart construction, smart manufacturing and more.
