Historical Hongkou: a pioneering hub of social, cultural and economic prosperity

Hongkou District has always been a pioneer during China’s reform and opening up. Shanghai’s first modern residential neighborhood, the Quyang Community, was erected in Hongkou, along with China’s first stock exchange, the first berthing luxury cruise liner and the first national shipping exchange. The Hongkou government has launched an exhibition on the top 66th floor of the White Magnolia Plaza, the tallest skyscraper in Puxi, with 100 such debut cases in Hongkou. These innovative and pioneering cases being showcased in historical photos and exhibits are about the economic, social and cultural development of the northern district, which has been developed into a prosperous downtown region.

1990: Shanghai Stocks Exchange was launched in Hongkou, the first of its sort since new China was established in 1949.

1996: Shanghai Shipping Trade Center, the first of its sort in China, opened in Hongkou.

2016: An old housing upgrade program began in Chunyangli neighborhood, making it the first old residential renovation project to see residents return to their homes after the facelift.

2018: Shanghai’s first office to install lifts in old apartments was launched in Hongkou.

1996: Residents moved out of their homes in Hongzhen Old Street, a shantytown in Hongkou, as major renovation projects started to improve local housing conditions.

2018: Hongkou pioneered citywide to install a smart trash sorting system in the local communities to encourage sorting.
