The Shanghai Consumer Council announced Shanghai's best qipao, or cheongsam brands, based on public voting and evaluation by experts on Saturday.

They include more than 10 brands such as Lomell, Chichap and Longfeng.

Consideration was given to aspects such as appearance, design and comfort, and 16 cheongsam companies in Shanghai entered the final round, the council said.

More than 30 companies applied and were required to guarantee product quality, complete consumer rights protection mechanisms and service systems in place.

Experts rated their qipao dresses based on their craft, appearance and sewing, and 2,000 consumers of different ages and from different industries were surveyed based on qipao's design, pattern, coloring, details and their will of purchase, according to the council.

On Saturday, 10 experts and about 100 consumers picked their favorite cheongsam brands based on craft, artistry, practicability, inheritance and fashion.

"We require companies to use at lease five crafts out of eight such as pankou or frog fasteners in their clothing, and that cheongsams by these 16 companies display exquisite craft and local culture," said Yuan Rong, an expert with the Shanghai University of Engineering Science.

Tao Ailian, secretary-general of the council, said the aim of the event is to choose cheongsams that best represent the features of Shanghai style.

"We hope Shanghai qipao will become a unique product of the city and be bought by tourists from home and abroad," she said.
