Ambulances equipped with 5G will serve the upcoming China International Import Expo, the Shanghai Health Commission said on Wednesday.

A 5G medical service platform will cover all ambulances attending the CIIE convention center and designated hospitals. With this platform, ambulances can send data and conduct video calls with doctors while en route to hospitals.

Meanwhile, the city's first batch of specialized ambulances for transporting critical newborns in need of emergency care were also announced.

In total, Shanghai plans to equip a fleet of 26 new ambulances especially for the transportation of critical newborns. The first six such ambulances are available at the Shanghai Medical Emergency Center, which is in charge of patient transport in downtown areas. Another 20 ambulances for outlying districts will be available before year-end, officials said.

“Previously, critical-condition infants were just carried by ordinary ambulances using an incubator,” said Ding Weidong from the Shanghai Medical Emergency Center. “We consulted specialists from leading pediatric hospitals to purchase equipment and order vehicles specially designed for critical newborn baby transportation. Oxygen and other vital systems are all in line with the special demands of infant transportation.”

City ambulances transport some 2,000 critical newborn babies every year.
