Customer service centers at Pudong International Airport are offering services in 62 languages for passengers arriving for the second China International Import Expo.

Staff and volunteers at service stations at the airport can speak English and Mandarin, while a specialist team can speak Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

The staff have been equipped with a translation machine that can offer instance translation in 62 languages, said Shi Zhiying, head of the service team at the airport.

"Many foreign passengers from various countries came to the service stations to ask for help during the first expo, so we've largely enhanced our language ability to better serve the participants and tourists," Shi said.

A remote video conversation screen has also been installed at each service counter as well as on every staff member's mobile phone. Sign language specialists can offer translations for deaf-mute passengers.

The airport authority has also installed a number of hi-tech screens, facilities and robots at the terminal buildings to offer services.

"Magic walls" have been installed at the S1 satellite terminal at Pudong to guide passengers to toilets, boarding gates and elevators on a touch screen. Passengers can scan a QR code to download the guide to their mobile phones.

Two robots will serve passengers during the expo which will open at the National Exhibition and Convention Center from November 5 to 10. They will make their debut at the airport ahead of the expo, according to the airport authority.

Apart from flight information and guidance across the terminals, the robots can also create video conversations with service staff at the airport to offer tailored services around the clock.

At the Hongqiao airport, the first batch of 144 intelligent chair arms have been installed in a trial operation. A touch screen can be used to glean the latest flight information, collect opinions from passengers and charge mobile phones.
