The Chinese stage drama “The Yellow Storm,” adapted from the epic novel “Four Generations Under One Roof,” one of the most important works of China’s renowned novelist and playwright Lao She, will make a return to Shanghai Oriental Art Center from October 30 to November 1.

The three-hour play by Chinese mainland stage director and playwright Tian Qinxin made a big splash in China’s drama circle when it premiered almost a decade ago.

It describes the life of Chinese people during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), involving 130 people from 17 families.

Presented by the National Theater of China, it was well received by the city’s audiences at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in November 2010.

This time, it’s making a return as part of the 2019 Pudong Festival of Culture and Art. As a preferential policy, Pudong New Area residents can buy a ticket at a price as low as 80 yuan.

Lao She is the pen name of Chinese novelist Shu Qingchun (1899-1966), one of the most significant figures of Chinese literature in the 20th century. His other best-known works include the novel “Rickshaw Boy” and the play “Teahouse.”

The adapted play mainly focuses on 30 characters from three families, performed by well-known acting personalities such as Tao Hong and Xin Baiqing.

“It’s like creating an epic of ordinary Beijing residents,” said Tian. “Different people hold different attitudes toward the era while having varied connection with the society. It’s a tribute to Lao She’s insistence in creating works about national culture.”
