A total of 13,683 drivers were caught making illegal left turns at crossroads by new cameras installed by Shanghai traffic police since April, police said on Thursday.

The city now has eight police cameras that can detect drivers not driving close to the center of an intersection when making a left turn, an offense that can result in driving into a wrong lane.

In a March accident in suburban Songjiang District, a pedestrian on the zebra crossings was severely injured by a car that was taking an “inadequate” left turn and heading into a wrong lane with vehicles running in the other direction.

The cameras take videos of the offending cars and police backstage take three pictures indicating the offenses as evidence against the drivers.

The first of such cameras were placed at the crossroads of Hutai and Lingshi roads, and more have been installed at the crossroads of Zhenhua Road and Dahua Road No. 3, Qixin and Huxing roads, Wuzhong and Wanyuan roads, Hengshan and Taojiang roads, Wuning and Lanxi roads, Keshan and Pangu roads, and Hutai and Yichuan roads.

Offenders face a fine of 100 yuan (US$15) with two demerits on their driving license.

Meanwhile, traffic police said a sonar system detecting drivers illegally blaring their horns has been installed at the crossroads of Xujiahui and Madang roads.

The city’s three police cameras catching drivers cutting ahead of others when driving on the elevated road and not observing the rule of alternating with each other in traffic merging have caught 7,625 since the end of last year, according to the police.

The largest number of offenses happened on the Yixian Elevated Road near the exit to the Inner Ring Road with 6,248 drivers caught so far, while 839 and 538 offenses happened on the Yan’an Elevated Road at the Fujian Road on-ramp and the North-South Elevated Road near the entrance to Luban Road Viaduct.

An offender is fined 200 yuan.
