Gamers and animation fans are enjoying the first offline expo held in the city since the coronavirus outbreak. The five-day 2020 China International Cartoon and Game Expo, also known as CCG Expo, opened on Thursday.

More than 250 exhibitors – manga, animation and game developers from home and abroad – have brought about their latest work and merchandise to the event.

Strict precautions are in place at the Shanghai Expo Center in the Pudong New Area with visitors and staff required to wear masks and show a green health code before entering.

But those precautions, long queues and the morning drizzle didn’t stopped thousands of fans from flocking to the expo on opening day to watching their favorite cosplay shows and buy the latest merchandise, which included a limited edition of a Boba Fett figure to mark the 40th anniversary of “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.”

Han Jianing, a fan of the “Mr Love: Queen's Choice” mobile game, rushed to the booth of the female-oriented visual novel game to buy products only available at the event.

“Many of my friends, who are not in Shanghai, asked me to buy something for them,” said Han. “And I waited in line for at least two hours to get what I wanted. The organizers said that the first 250 people could get an extra CCG Expo limited style bag, so many people rushed as early as possible.”

For cosplayers, the event was the first opportunity for some time to be their favorite characters in public. A cosplayer dressed as “Kaito Kid” from the Japanese animation series “Case Closed” said she got up early to do her makeup and get her costume ready.

“It’s the first time I have worn a mask to do cosplay but I don’t think it is a problem,” she said. “I can always take the mask off for pictures.”

Forums on the development of esports in Shanghai are being held during the event and there will be a contest to design cultural products for Shanghai’s time-honored brands. There is also an art exhibition paying tribute to medical workers at the venue.
