Substandard diesel is brown and has a pungent odor, the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation said.

Two batches of diesel fuel failed quality tests, posing potential safety hazards, Shanghai's market watchdog said on Wednesday.

The fuel was from the Shanghai Shenma gas station in Jiading District and the Shanghai Shuichan gas station in Yangpu District, the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation said.

The former failed for its flashpoint, an important index indicating the vaporizability of diesel fuel and the danger of fire, the administration said.

The fuel had a lower flashpoint than China's national standard, which means it is more volatile than standard products, the administration said.

The latter fuel was substandard for its cetane number, an indicator of its combustibility.

In total, 128 batches of diesel fuel were checked.

The administration also conducted checks on 214 batches of gasoline and 80 batches of B5 biodiesel, with all of them up to standard.

The quality of the city's gasoline and diesel fuel has been stable for several years as the substandard rate is much lower than that of general industrial products and consumer goods, the administration said.

Last year, two batches of diesel fuel out of 123 batches failed tests, and all gasoline checked passed tests, it said.

All the gasoline and diesel fuel tested in 2017 and 2018 was up to standard.

Substandard diesel is brown and has a pungent odor, the administration said.
