Renowned Chinese writer Ye Yonglie died at the age of 80 in Shanghai on Friday, according to the Shanghai Writers' Association.

Ye was born in the city of Wenzhou, eastern China's Zhejiang Province, in 1940. He graduated from the chemistry department of Peking University in 1963 and started to compose sci-fi works in his early years.

His sci-fi novel "Xiao Lingtong's Travels in the Future," published in 1978, is well-known in the literary arena. He is also one of the main writers of the popular Chinese science book "One Hundred Thousand Whys."

Since the 1980s, Ye has shifted his focus to documentary writing and novel creation.
