Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reported 27 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, all in the regional capital Urumqi, the regional health commission said Thursday in its daily report.

Urumqi also saw 12 new asymptomatic cases Wednesday.

The newly confirmed and asymptomatic cases were all found among people under medical observation and will not lead to new transmission through communities, said Shang Yulan, deputy secretary-general of the Urumqi municipal government.

Urumqi has seen the number of new confirmed cases decline with some fluctuations since July 31, Shang said, adding that the city is still on high alert against the epidemic.

By Wednesday, Xinjiang had 637 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 130 asymptomatic cases, and 17,301 people were still under medical observation.
